Canopy cover between plots was assessed using a portable leaf area index (LAI) meter (LICOR 2200C). 16 points across each plot were recorded. Results showed that the non-salvage logged plot (intact plot) had more than three times the leaf area compared to the salvage-logged plot, comfirming visual observations.
Predawn water potentials (Ψ pre) were collected for six resprouts per species per site. Data was collected in June and again in September of 2022 and 2023.
Average internode length (cm) was measured on 6 resprouts per species per plot.
Maximum vessel length (cm) was measured on 6 resprouts per species per plot. Max vessel length was determined by cutting 2 meter long resprouts and submerging the distal ends of each under water. 1 cm segments of the resprout were cut back from the apical tip until bubbles were observed emerging from the cut site.
Here, we did not include Q. agrifolia as it's max vessel length has been well documented (Jacobsen et al. 2012). We also explored how vessel length varied within two shrub species that occupy both plots (Arctostaphylos manzanita and Baccharis pilularis), but have limited sample sizes.
Xylem vessel hydraulic diameter (Dh) was measured on 5 resprouts per species per plot. Variance was higher under salvage-logged conditons but the median values were not significantly different between plots.
